    Family of Killer Whales
    [original]

    PRICE$425.00

There is always the dilemma in describing the work of Haida artist Darrel Amos, trying to avoid from the refrain “this is surely one of Darrel’s most spectacular works.” Yet over and over, as the years pass, this is true, though it does not in any way diminish previous paintings. In this large painting of a killer whale family, Darrel Amos has shown the close-knit nature of the family constellation, an d indeed of the orca pod formations. He describes this as a mother and father, and two young ones. The largest figure is the blue male, and below him is the red mother whale. Both of the young ones are blue, but there is a special feature of the smaller, female one in the lower right quadrant. Here Darrel Amos has chosen to use a metallic paint for this young one. Depending on the light, the body is a matte pale blue or it can turn into a shining hue that almost leaps out at the viewer. Even with this contrast, there is nothing “flashy” about the figure nor of the painting as a whole. It’s not kitsch, it’s a revelation. V 20” x H 30”, acrylic on 140 lb acid free art paper.
