    weeping frog woman
    [limited edit]

    PRICE$150.00

Nisga’a artist, Bert Azak, has created a very powerful, poignant portrait of a storied character called the Weeping Woman. The story of how she came to be perpetually in tears is a complex one, with many versions. In essence however, it may be said that a woman was taken in by the Frog clan and she became completely at one with them. Once as she was sitting by a river, a canoe filled with nine young men on a fishing expedition came by. They hadn’t had much luck, were frustrated and impatient and happened to notice a number of baby frogs emerging from the mud and backwaters, heading toward the river. Just for the fun of it, the boys leapt to the shore and because hitting and smashing and killing the baby frogs. The Frog Woman came over to spoke a powerful warning – that they would all die and at the nine resting points back along the river, one would die in each of these places. Indeed it was so. Stories of the consequences of destroying the natural world are often found in Aboriginal traditions. Bert Azak has shown clearly the sorrow of this woman, her tears flow blood read, a destroyed frog slips from her hands, her body is embedded with frog imagery. This is a limited edition print, 89 of 135, signed by Bert Azak. It is on softly textured, acid-free art paper. V22”xxH 15, 54 Grams.
