    Dogfish Woman
    [original]

    PRICE$233.00

This is the first time that Haida artist Darrel Amos has provided a painting of the dogfish, which figures predominantly in transformation stories of the Haida people. The dogfish itself is a species in the shark family. It is a small creature, found in the chilly waters of Haida Gwaii. The story associated with it is of a woman, Dogfish Woman, who in former times could transform herself into the dogfish and live as she wished in the surrounding watery world. She is often portrayed with a lip-distending labret, and reflections of that are in this painting. When bring this painting for presentation for sale, Darrel Amos emphasized that this painting was not of a shark – and after discussing more about the symbolism of the shark and the relationship of the shark and role of Dog Woman, the distinction he was making between the dogfish of traditional story and the shark as known elsewhere became clear. The image also emphasizes the dogfish sharp teeth, large head, and sinuous shape and movement. Acrylic paint on art paper, V22” x H15”, 70 grams
