    Honeybirds
    [original]

    PRICE$43.00

Here is another exquisite drawing by Tsekani artist, Ron Solanas. As with all of his street-based work, Ron adapted a “found” piece of material to use for his pen and coloured pencil pictures. He does not have time or space or stability enough to work with brushes and paint. He works quickly, selling his work to passersby, or – his specialty – dropping by small offices and social services to find buyers. Marylee collected his works from many years, and in some cases actually commissioned a work for title pages of research reports or even an illustration in a book – and paying professional rates for these. This lovely picture is done on a left-over piece of white card paper to create this picture of two “honey-birds,” an everyday name for humming birds. The hummingbird is often seen as a fragile creature, with its tiny size and thin beak, and almost ethereal wings. In reality they are immensely strong and very tough in their own distinctive ways. Ron’s drawing conveys all of these qualities in a most beautiful way. V 7” x 9” pen and coloured pencil. 10 grams
