    Dancing Trickster-black
    [yellow cedar]

    PRICE$500.00

v70xh14x2cm thk (v27"xh6") This is surely a stunning work-- David Gonzales has created a substantial three-dimensional portrayal of that mythic/legendary creature, Raven, the Trickster of story and song for Aboriginal peoples of the Northwest Coast of North America. The carving is of yellow cedar, which is in reality almost white when carved. David Gonzales traces out the figure, shapes it, then uses a "burnt sienna" tone and black in acrylics to draw the features. Next he incises them, in strong, precise lines, the white wood shining through the body, the head, the feet. He also has shaped the feathers in detail of head and body in detail, with the shell-like shapes very apparent in the back of the head and the back of the body, and then the lower wings themselves. These parts are in a matte black, contrasting with the reddish-brown of the claws and other key elements of the body. It has been lightly finished with a mineral oil, that protects it, and it completely absorbed, so it does not rub off when touched. This is a piece to cherish and display with pride, a clear demonstration of the skills and persevering talent of the artists of Indian Art From The Edge.
