    raven and moonchild
    [red cedar w ]

    PRICE$165.00

Alex Mountain, of the KwAGiulth nation, from the community of Mamalillikulla in northwest British Columbia, likes to carve substantial pieces that tell important stories. This is red cedar carving reflects the story of the creation of light, in this case, the light of the moon. The various accounts of the role of the raven in this creation have as a base the fact that Raven was able to steal the sun from a box where it was kept from others. There was also a Moonchild there and raven grasped the child, freed it, and the Moonchild's reflection then lighted the night. Alex Mountain's carving is a raven feather overall, and the moon is held in its beak. On the lower side of the piece is a portrait of the Moonchild. It's face is round, its expression both happy and perhaps a bit uneasy. The red cedar is tinted with wax-based polish and then buffed to a high shine, protecting it for the ages. The close-up picture shows the carving next to a terrier, to give a clear sense of the proportions of this distinctive creation by Alex Mountain. It is 24" long and is 5" at its widest point, with a maximum thickness of 1/2 inches.
