    Raven mask
    [original]

    PRICE$235.00

Cree artist Garnet Tobacco has spent a great deal of his life in the urban Aboriginal milieu of the Northwest coast. Here he has learned of the cultures and artistic traditions of Coastal peoples. This dramatic painting is of a mask, conveying the sense of ceremonial masks used by the may Northwest Coast Indigenous cultures as they relate their traditional stories in festive events. The figure is that of a raven, and there is the suggestion of the cedar strips and threads that often are used to elaborate the nature of the animal, human, or spiritual character being portrayed via a mask. The heavy, dark beak of the raven, the blackish-green colour of its head, the bright eyes – all against a dark, moonlit background, create a powerful, haunting image. As with all of his paintings, Garnet Tobacco uses sponges, not brushes, for his work. Acrylic on heavy art board V 27 x h 18”
