Haida artist Darrel Amos consistently brings new interpretations to the life of the land, sea, and air that are an integral part of the world of the Haida. Even though Darrel has spent much of his life in urban settings, living at the edges where Indigenous and other worlds meet, he is firmly rooted in the experiences of the traditional Haida worlds. In this quite large painting, Darrel portrays the orca, or killer whale..It is dramatically curved, in an exaggerated twist as it may have taken a huge leap out of the water. Its eyes and the oval figure on the fluke are salmon. Darrel often inserts salmon forms into his work, because he sees these creatures as intimately connected, both relying on water, one preying on the other, but both relying completely on the health of the watery world.
